Criminal Defense Lawyers in Niagara
Millions of people visit Niagara every year for the falls, the casinos and wine country, and four international bridges connect the region to New York State. That makes Niagara unusual: many people charged here do not live here. Some are visitors from elsewhere in Ontario, some are from the United States, and some were stopped at a border crossing.
Provident Law LLP defends Niagara residents and visitors charged by Niagara Regional Police. Our partners handle early steps by video where the court allows, so out-of-town clients do not need to return for every date, and attend court in person for trials and key hearings.

Visitors Charged While in Niagara
If you were charged while visiting, your release documents may require you to return to Niagara for court. That can be costly and stressful. With a designation of counsel, your lawyer can appear for most routine dates, and many early appearances can proceed by video. We also ask for release conditions that make sense for someone who lives elsewhere, such as reporting by phone instead of in person.
Casino-Related Charges
Casinos are among the most heavily monitored places in Ontario. Charges arising there include theft of chips or cash, fraud involving credit or cheques, cheating at play and assaults on the gaming floor. Surveillance video is usually central and often detailed, but it can also be misread. We obtain all footage, not just the clips selected by casino security, and examine the full sequence of events before and after the incident.
Charges Arising at the Border
At the Rainbow, Peace, Queenston-Lewiston and Whirlpool bridges, Canada Border Services Agency officers can detain travellers and pass them to police for criminal charges. Common examples include undeclared firearms or weapons, drugs and false documents. Border searches follow different rules than searches inside Canada, but those rules still have limits. We examine what officers asked, what they searched and when you were told about your right to a lawyer.

What clients say
I just recently attended court today in Brampton and my lawyer was Arman Gill. My charges of breach of long-term supervision have been successfully withdrawn from the courts today. In regards, I am leaving a review and letting your firm know that your services were awesome and I am so happy that I don't have to face any jail time. Once again, your services at your law firm were awesome.
I had serious charges against me and, as an international student, dealing with legal issues is not easy, but Arman Gill always had my back and helped me by going above and beyond. Not only on weekdays, he always answered my calls even on weekends and after office hours. I never saw a lawyer with this much dedication to helping their clients. He got all my charges withdrawn at pre-trial with a peace bond. He always talked about my future and what I wanted as a result, and fought as hard as possible to get the best outcome for me.
I worked with Mr. Arman Gill, who helped my son obtain an absolute discharge, and I couldn't be more grateful. From our first meeting, he was knowledgeable and incredibly thorough. He explained every step of the process clearly and made us feel supported throughout. Thanks to his expertise, my son received the discharge and can now move forward with his life. Highly recommend to anyone facing similar challenges.
It was an honorable pleasure working with Armandeep Gill. He was very professional and communicative in helping my son beat his criminal charges. I would highly recommend him for his services.

Niagara Criminal Lawyer FAQs
-
Usually not. Once your lawyer files a designation of counsel, most routine appearances can proceed without you, and some can be done by video. You will normally need to attend for a trial or a guilty plea unless the court allows otherwise. Keep in mind that a pending Canadian charge may affect your ability to re-enter Canada, so plan your travel with your lawyer.
-
It can. United States border officers can ask about arrests and charges, and some offences, particularly drug offences and offences involving dishonesty, can make a person inadmissible to the US. Even a charge that is later withdrawn may lead to questions. If you cross the border regularly for work or family, tell us early so we can aim for an outcome that limits those risks.
-
Niagara criminal cases are heard in St. Catharines or Welland, depending on where the offence occurred and how cases are assigned in the region. Your undertaking, appearance notice or release order lists the courthouse and first date. If you are unsure or have lost your paperwork, call us and we will confirm the details for you.
-
It depends on your release conditions. Some orders require you to remain in Ontario or surrender your passport, while others allow travel. If you live outside Canada, the conditions should reflect that, and we can ask the Crown or court to adjust them. Never leave the country in breach of a condition, as that creates a new charge and may lead to a warrant.
-
Canadian court records are public, but most cases are not reported in the media, and police do not usually notify employers. Some jobs, licences and travel programs ask about charges, so you may need to disclose it in those situations. Resolving the case efficiently, ideally without a conviction, is the best way to limit its impact once you return home.
