King City Criminal Lawyers for Firearms and Rural Property Cases

King Township is rural York Region: estates, farms, horse properties and wooded lots between King City, Nobleton and Schomberg. Many residents own firearms lawfully for hunting, sport shooting or farm use. When a licence lapses, storage is questioned or police respond to a call at the property, a lawful owner can suddenly face criminal charges.

Armandeep Gill, one of our partners, focuses on firearms and weapons cases. Provident Law LLP defends King Township residents charged by York Regional Police and helps them protect both their freedom and their licence.

Unsafe Storage After a Police Visit

Storage charges often start with an unrelated call: a noise complaint, a domestic dispute or a welfare check. Officers see a firearm and assess how it is stored. The regulations set different rules for non-restricted, restricted and prohibited firearms, such as trigger locks, locked containers and separate ammunition. We compare the exact storage at your property with the regulations that applied to each firearm, because officers do not always get the classification or the rules right.

Expired Licences and Paperwork Problems

A firearms licence expires, and some owners do not notice until police do. Possessing a firearm without a valid licence can lead to a criminal charge, even for someone who has owned the same rifle lawfully for decades. These cases often resolve well when handled properly, through renewal, a withdrawal or a non-conviction outcome. We gather evidence of your history as a responsible owner and present it to the Crown early.

Seizures, Prohibition Orders and Licence Revocation

Police can seize firearms when they believe it is not in the interests of safety for a person to have them, sometimes without a warrant. The Crown may then apply to keep them and for a prohibition order. Separately, the Chief Firearms Officer can revoke your licence, which you can challenge by a reference hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice. We handle the criminal case, the forfeiture application and the licence challenge together.

I just recently attended court today in Brampton and my lawyer was Arman Gill. My charges of breach of long-term supervision have been successfully withdrawn from the courts today. In regards, I am leaving a review and letting your firm know that your services were awesome and I am so happy that I don't have to face any jail time. Once again, your services at your law firm were awesome.

I had serious charges against me and, as an international student, dealing with legal issues is not easy, but Arman Gill always had my back and helped me by going above and beyond. Not only on weekdays, he always answered my calls even on weekends and after office hours. I never saw a lawyer with this much dedication to helping their clients. He got all my charges withdrawn at pre-trial with a peace bond. He always talked about my future and what I wanted as a result, and fought as hard as possible to get the best outcome for me.

I worked with Mr. Arman Gill, who helped my son obtain an absolute discharge, and I couldn't be more grateful. From our first meeting, he was knowledgeable and incredibly thorough. He explained every step of the process clearly and made us feel supported throughout. Thanks to his expertise, my son received the discharge and can now move forward with his life. Highly recommend to anyone facing similar challenges.

King City Criminal Lawyer FAQs

  • Possessing a firearm without a valid licence can be an offence, even if you were licensed before. If your licence has expired, do not use or transport your firearms. Contact a lawyer before you speak to police about it, and consider applying for a new licence. Many expired-licence situations can be resolved without a criminal conviction when they are handled promptly and properly.

  • Often, yes. When police respond to a domestic incident at a home with firearms, they commonly seize them as a safety measure, and release conditions usually prohibit possessing weapons while the case is ongoing. Getting them back depends on how the criminal case ends and on any forfeiture or prohibition application by the Crown. We address all of this as part of the defence.

  • Possibly. If the charges are withdrawn or you are acquitted and no prohibition order is made, you can seek the return of lawfully owned firearms, provided your licence is valid. The Crown may oppose return on safety grounds, and the court decides. We prepare evidence of safe storage, your licensing history and your circumstances to support return.

  • If the Chief Firearms Officer refuses to issue or renew your licence, or revokes it, you can ask a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice to review that decision in a reference hearing. The judge considers whether the decision was justified based on the evidence. These hearings have strict filing deadlines, so if you receive a refusal or revocation notice, contact a lawyer right away.

  • Usually not. Most release conditions in firearms cases prohibit possessing any weapons, which means you cannot shoot at a range, hunt or handle firearms belonging to others until the case ends or the condition is changed. Breaching that condition is a new criminal charge. If you hunt or compete seriously, tell us, and we will raise it in discussions with the Crown.
